Punjab cabinet body approves sales tax for online cab fares.


Lahore: The Standing Committee of the Punjab Cabinet on Legislative Business on Tuesday provided its approval to the proposed 4% provincial sales tax on the fares of online ride-hailing services operating within the province, according to news sources. To facilitate this measure, fares for raid hailing apps such as Uber, Careem, and Airlift are expected to undergo an increase on account of this new tax implementation.

The authorities concerned announced this decision during the 22nd meeting of the cabinet committee; held under the chairmanship of Punjab Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Social Welfare Raja Basharat.

Further, the committee sanctioned:

  • Development of the University of Child Health at the Children’s Hospital in Lahore
  • Draft of the Punjab Special Education Policy 2019
  • Amendments to the Act of Technical Universities, for the Department of Trade and Industries

  • Constitution of the executive committee of the Punjab Heritage Foundation
  • Development of the Universities of Bhakkar, Layyah
  • Re-labelling of the public degree, inter and commerce colleges as associate colleges
  • Forwarding the case of 211 technical union secretaries to the Punjab Absorption Committee for absorption as sub-engineers
