Mithi: Tharkparkars first flora, fauna survey launched. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Thar Foundation, a subsidiary of the Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC), recently launched the first-ever survey of Tharkparkars first flora and fauna in the Tharparkar district, according to news sources.

Survey launched to identify endangered wildlife species

To this effect, the SECMC and the IUCN signed a partnership agreement during a ceremony. The event was attended by IUCN-Pakistan representatives, planning and development officials, the wildlife department, Thar’s elected representatives, SECMC, Thar Foundation, and an NGO’s representatives.

Syed Abul Fazal Rizvi of the SECMC linked this data gathering survey in Tharparkar district about flora and fauna to the undergoing conservation efforts of the SECMC-IUCN partnership. He said that the data would help in the assessment of animals and plants to devise an appropriate course of action for ensuring their survival.

Mahmood Akhtar Cheema of the IUCN-Pakistan said that the survey would cover birds, reptiles, mammals, insects, amphibians, and vegetation and will lead to the identification and GIS-based mapping of wildlife hotspots and ecologically vulnerable locations.
