Punjab dept amends motor vehicles rules to register private transport companies.
Lahore: The Punjab Transport Department has amended the rules of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965, in order to register online private transport companies operating in the province, a news source reported. To this effect, the officials concerned have dispatched the summary to the provincial cabinet for approval.

As per the publication, the department made several revisions to the ordinance following a series of meetings, which took place during the last six months, with the representatives of private ride-hailing services.
Subsequently, the amendments were shared with the internal legal branch and later, with the finance, regulations, and law department for further insight.
The publication also disclosed that a sub-committee of the provincial cabinet had approved these amendments, which would be presented before the cabinet for ratification.

According to the proposals, online transport companies are not allowed to operate without registering under a license and maintaining it. Initially, the companies will have to pay PKR 5 million for a license, which will remain valid for three years. Afterward, they can renew their licenses for PKR 2 million. However, the companies which fail to get themselves registered will be fined up to PKR 3 million.
