Four dams to be constructed in Quetta.

Quetta: The Quetta Irrigation Department plans to commence with the construction work of four dams in the city on a timely basis, a news source quoted department official Xen Qurban Jatoi as saying. He further stated that the initiative was geared toward addressing the issue of water shortage in the provincial capital.

Jatoi revealed that the department would complete the project at a cost of PKR 450 million; adding that the officials concerned had advertised tenders for this purpose in newspapers. He added that the authorities concerned would construct a dam at Kachmore worth PKR 250 million, which is expected to benefit farmers of the adjoining areas following its completion. Construction of dams in Sara Ghargai and Akhtarabad at a cost of PKR 200 million were also in the pipeline, he said.

He further stated that the Winder Dam would be constructed under the supervision of the federal government at a cost of PKR 15 billion. This dam would help irrigate 10,000 acres of land in both Winder and Lasbela districts.

The official said that the Balochistan government was focusing on constructing dams in a bid to alleviate water deficiency and enhance groundwater levels in various areas of Quetta. He added that the relevant officers had received special directives with regard to ensuring high standards of construction and not wasting the funds provided for the projects.
